With an impressive history spanning more than a millennium, Sean’s Bar in Athlone claims the distinction of being the continent’s oldest tavern, as confirmed by Guinness World Records. Even with such antiquity, it continues to function seamlessly as though time has had little effect on it.

Ye Olde Fighting Cocks
– Established in 793 – however, its shutdown in 2022 due to issues related to the pandemic led to a different establishment holding this distinction. Eventually, Sean’s Bar took over as the titleholder for being Europe’s oldest pub. Located in Athlone, an Irish town beside the River Shannon midway between Dublin and Galway, it was constructed circa 900 AD. According to the Guinness World Records, this makes it the longest-standing public house in all of Europe. Here lies its story.

It once belonged to a particular individual named Luain Mac Luighdeach, who served as a guide for travelers navigating the fast-moving Shannon River. This spot was near the ‘Great Ford,’ an essential route connecting the eastern and western parts of Ireland. Over time, as the inn gained prominence, a community developed around it, ultimately evolving into what we now know as the town of Athlone (derived from ‘Áth Luain,’ referring to the ford associated with Luain). In 1129, under King Turlough O’Connor’s reign, construction began on the initial timber fortress aimed at safeguarding this critical area.
In 1970, the structure was renovated. During this process, workers uncovered walls constructed with wattle and daub, which is characteristic of that period.

Centuries-old structures have been discovered within the premises. Additionally, coins issued by the establishment’s previous proprietors were unearthed; these were used for exchanging currency with patrons. Remnants from early Ireland can currently be seen at the National Museum of Ireland, and fragments of the initial walls remain visible inside Sean’s Bar. This extraordinary narrative attracted the attention of the Guinness World Records, earning Sean’s Bar the title of the oldest pub in Ireland. So far, no more ancient tavern has come to light, making Sean’s Bar not only the oldest in Ireland but also the oldest in all of Europe.
