Here’s How the Ramcharger’s Innovative Range-Extended EV System Powers Up

The driver has three operational modes to select from, determining when and how to utilize the truck’s dual power systems.

Ram
It announced its Ramcharger extended-range electric truck. As we knew, it will feature the brand’s 3.6-liter V-6 engine connected to a generator, which produces power for the batteries and dual electric motors. On Monday, the carmaker provided further details, revealing more about how these gasoline and electrical elements collaborate to achieve an impressive range of 690 miles.

I’ve already informed you about the Ramcharger’s 92 kWh power pack.
And why is only 70 kWh available for use? By retaining some power as backup, the system ensures

Always ensures maximum power delivery to the driver, even when the battery’s charge level drops significantly and the generator becomes the only electrical resource available. This situation should ideally be avoided. However, Ram offers drivers three specific operational settings that determine how electricity, whether sourced from the battery or the generator, is utilized. These modes include: Electric+, E-Save, and Eco.

If you’re looking for an entirely electric vehicle experience,Electric+ is the way to go. Just press the button, and the engine won’t start until the battery’s charge drops below usability levels. This typically equates to about 140 miles under regular driving conditions, as stated by Ram. Of course, aggressively pressing the accelerator or hauling up to 14,000 pounds can cut this distance considerably. However, regardless of how firmly you step on the gas, the engine remains inactive in Electric+ mode until the battery is fully discharged.

When the engine starts up, the generator supplies electricity to the motors. In addition, the battery holds enough charge to maintain the Ram’s peak performance until the 27-gallon fuel tank empties out. Once refilled, you can get going again; however, the generator cannot fully recharge the battery. To restore it completely, you must connect it to an external power source.

In E-Save mode, the engine turns on whenever necessary. Although this doesn’t boost your horsepower, it keeps the battery’s present level of charge steady as you operate the vehicle. Should you initiate driving with a fully charged battery using E-Save mode, the charge remains constant until the fuel supply depletes. However, if you activate E-Save mode when the battery is less than half-charged, it gradually restores the battery to about fifty percent.

What makes this mode appealing? According to Ram, it offers a means to maintain certain all-electric capabilities during particular stages of your trip—like driving into urban areas with restrictions against emissions. By opting for E-Save mode, you avoid depleting your battery entirely, saving some charge for quieter operation when needed later.

The last mode available is Eco. Ram did not provide extensive details about this setting, merely stating that it’s ideal for saving energy. When using Eco mode, both the horsepower output and less critical features such as environmental control systems are curtailed with an emphasis on reducing energy consumption. It remains uncertain whether activating Eco mode alone can help reach Ram’s claimed maximum distance of 690 miles. However, should you be driving under moderate weather conditions without extreme temperatures, selecting Eco mode allows you to maximize fuel efficiency—be it gasoline or electricity.
