The Democratic mayor informed host Audie Cornish that he wouldn’t permit local law enforcement to carry out ICE deportation directives and criticized Homan for suggesting he would face prosecution if Johnson refuses to comply.
“To put it bluntly, I find it utterly deplorable. To be completely honest with you, Chicago has consistently stood up for this nation,” the mayor stated.

Of Chicago Republicans stated, “We’re beginning our efforts right here in Chicago, Illinois. Should your Chicago mayor refuse to assist, he may choose to step down. However, should he obstruct us—by deliberately sheltering or hiding an undocumented individual—I will pursue legal action against him.”
In the CNN interview, Cornish challenged Johnson regarding this menace, questioning whether he thinks his “immigration-friendly policies” have made him a target for Homan and the Trump administration.

The mayor supported his strategies, stating they just stop local police from acting akin to ICE officers, yet he affirmed that the city remains receptive to working alongside the federal administration in different sectors.
“For forty years now, Chicago has maintained a welcoming city policy. This policy basically ensures that our local law enforcement won’t act as federal deputies,” he stated. “In essence, we aren’t going to obstruct collaboration with federal agencies since we regularly work together with them.”

Johnson went on, “Local law enforcement shouldn’t act like ICE agents because it erodes the trust between residents and police officers, which they already have their hands full dealing with plenty of other issues.”
During his tenure as mayor, Johnson has consistently upheld his city’s sanctuary designation and voiced disdain for collaborating with federal authorities on issues of illegal immigration.

In January regarding how locals should react if Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) accesses city premises.
“Reach out to the lawyer or general counsel assigned to your agency or department for additional advice. Notify the most senior individual present or the specified onsite supervisor and avoid taking any actions until they arrive,” the guidelines recommended.
They emphasized that individuals should request warrant copies and refrain from consenting to ICE accessing “any private or ‘sensitive’ areas,” without obstructing any searches even when denied entry. Additional guidance includes maintaining detailed notes and generating up-to-date written documentation.

“Any measures that heighten concerns about deportation make Chicago a riskier place,” Johnson told legislators. “These anxieties lead witnesses and victims to refrain from working with law enforcement. It is crucial that everyone cooperates with the authorities, irrespective of their immigration background, to meet the city’s objectives of lowering criminal activity and seeking justice for those affected.”
In the podcast episode, Johnson shared with Cornish, “All we’re really hoping for from the federal administration is acknowledgment of the elegance and significance that numerous American cities embody. At present, my duty lies in supporting the residents of Chicago, particularly when the federal government overlooks the contributions of everyday workers.”
Once again, he countered Trump’s and Holder’s criticisms of Chicago’s sanctuary policies by saying, “If the federal government and specifically the Trump administration aim to show hostility and contempt toward the residents of Chicago and their efforts, then naturally we will oppose that.”
Johnson added that his government is “not impeding” feds looking to deport criminal illegal immigrants, and reiterated Chicago law enforcement will cooperate with them so long as they show up with “a criminal, valid warrant.”
