The leading Republican in the Senate’s group focused on governmental effectiveness is calling for the IRS to carry out an additional review of both present and past workers and independent contractors associated with the agency. As of May 2023, these individuals collectively owed approximately $46 million in overdue taxes.
As of May 2023, just fewer than 6,000 IRS staff members and contractors faced audits for failing to pay their taxes, and roughly one-third of them had entered into payment arrangements. A further report from the Treasury inspector general in March 2023 disclosed that over 42,000 civilian federal workers did not submit their required forms.

of Tax Day.
In 2023, Ernst began implementing strategies to improve supervision over the IRS. She brought forth the “Audit the IRS Act” in July 2024, aimed at disqualifying people who have significant overdue taxes from holding positions as IRS officials or staff members.
