Elon Musk
has never been a supporter of content moderation. After Musk took over Twitter in 2022, one of the key factors
behind his decision
To purchase the social media platform posed challenges related to content management, particularly concerning bans on right-wing accounts that he supported.
Currently, Musk seems to be attempting to assert influence over content regulation on social media platforms that aren’t under his ownership.
According to a
new report
In The Verge, Musk reached out to Reddit’s CEO, Steve Huffman, about certain content on the social media site.
Shortly after Musk’s exchange with Huffman, a post discussing DOGE staff was removed. The subreddit where this discussion began, r/WhitePeopleTwitter, faced consequences as well, being suspended for 72 hours.
Before Musk reached out to the Reddit CEO, the owner of X went on a public tirade against Reddit. Among his complaints, Musk
claimed
SomeReddituserswereallegedly”inlegalterritory”forpostingderogatoryremarksaboutDOGEemployees.ThecommentsonRedditthatwerementionedinrelationtoMusk’spostseemtobelongtoathreadthathasthatsubjectcompanyremovedafterMusktouchedbasewiththem.
Previously, Reddit had indicated that it
took action
against “violent content,” it wasn’t known until now that Musk had personally filed a complaint with the company’s CEO.
Musk has also called it ”
insane
” that some subreddits had banned the ability to post links to X. It’s unclear if Musk brought that complaint up in his messages with Huffman. As of publishing, no action has been taken against subreddits that don’t allow X links.
Although certain remarks within the discussion might come across as intimidating and should therefore be removed irrespective of this, it raises eyebrows that Musk has the ability to privately request actions from chief executives at external firms pertaining to editorial choices.
We treat all reports of breaches concerning Reddit policies with seriousness, regardless of whether they occur on Reddit itself or via other public or private channels,” stated Reddit in an official comment to The Verge. “We will review the flagged material and act accordingly if it contravenes our rules.
