Ontario Cools Tensions: Ends Trade Spat With the U.S.

The Premier of Ontario has declared a halt to the proposed 25% tariff on electricity exports to certain U.S. states.

Following a telephone conversation between Doug Ford and United States Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, an agreement was reached to publish a shared statement via social media platforms. The two leaders plan to convene for further discussions this coming Thursday in Washington D.C.

Following Donald Trump’s comeback to the White House, the U.S. president has frequently threatened to impose new tariffs on both Canada and Mexico. In response to this threat being realized, Canada has hit back, with certain regions going so far as to prohibit the sale of American alcoholic drinks.

Ontario provides electricity to New York, Michigan, and Minnesota, earning an annual revenue of $700 million for the province.
