The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency stated on Wednesday that the State Department has authorized the sale of eight MQ-9B Remotely Piloted Aircraft to Qatar as requested.

If finalized, this would mark the first sale to Qatar and the surrounding area, according to a source close to the situation.

The $1.96 billion worth of weaponry encompasses guided ammunition, Hellfire missiles, sophisticated radar, monitoring gear, and secure communication systems—enhancing its capacity for air-based intelligence gathering and offensive operations.

Qatar has committed upwards of $8 billion since 2003 to develop Al Udeid Air Base, which significantly bolsters critical missions conducted under the purview of the U.S. Central Command. In terms of military transactions between both nations, the total value exceeds $26 billion, positioning Qatar as the second-biggest participant in the Foreign Military Sales program. From 2016 onwards, approvals for direct defense exports amounted to more than $2.8 billion, largely comprising aircraft, training programs, and night vision equipment, as reported by the State Department.
