Ukraine has consented to adopt a proposed 30-day cease-fire immediately from the U.S., which would be valid pending approval from Moscow under similar conditions, as stated jointly by officials late Tuesday.
“The Ukraine agreed to consider the U.S. suggestion for a temporary 30-day cease-fire, effective immediately and extendable through mutual consent between both sides. This proposition must also be acknowledged and put into practice simultaneously by Russia,” stated their combined declaration following discussions in Jeddah.
The two delegations concurred on naming their negotiation teams and promptly commenced talks aimed at achieving a lasting peace that ensures Ukraine’s future security.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who will be taking the proposal to Moscow next, stated to journalists that “the decision rests with them.” He added that should the Kremlin decline the agreement, “it will sadly become clear what factors are hindering peace.”
This agreement represents a notable shift in the relationship between the United States and Ukraine, as both nations now indicate they stand together during these continuous discussions. Oleksandr Feldman, head of the Ukrainian President’s Office, stated following their meeting that “we showed today to everyone our commitment to achieving peace—a fair and enduring peace.”
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who was absent from the discussions in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday night, stated that Washington acknowledges “our arguments and agrees with our propositions” according to his announcement.
“Our stance remains unequivocal: since the outset of the conflict, Ukraine has been committed to pursuing peace, and we aim to take all necessary steps to secure peace swiftly and effectively—so that hostilities cease entirely,” stated Zelenskyy.
If Russia consents to a total ceasefire “not just concerning missiles, drones, and bombs, not only in the Black Sea region, but across the whole front line,” the Ukrainian president further stated, “the truce will begin immediately.”
“Ukraine is prepared for peace. It now falls upon Russia to demonstrate whether it intends to bring an end to the conflict—or prolong it. The moment has arrived for complete transparency,” Zelenskyy stated.
In the meantime, the Trump administration announced on Tuesday that it would promptly reinstate suspended military aid to Ukraine as well as resume intelligence-sharing with Kiev.
The complete reversal on these two matters occurred over a week following the implementation of those measures aimed at compelling Zelenskyy to engage in talks that might result in a peace agreement with Moscow.
Representatives from both nations convened in Saudi Arabia to additionally deliberate upon the potential for finalizing an agreement concerning crucial raw materials. The subsequent communiqué indicated that this accord should ideally be reached “at the earliest opportunity.”
