CEO John Lee has commended the mainland Chinese animated film Ne Zha 2, encouraging his administration to adopt the “fearlessness” demonstrated by the film’s characters and “forge” their own way.
In a Facebook post on Sunday morning, Lee shared that he and his wife watched the box office hit recently. The cinema was filled with “joy and laughter,” he said, adding that there were also emotional moments during touching scenes showing the mother’s “selfless love” for her child.
Lee referenced a “notable quotation” from the film: “If there isn’t a path forward, I’ll forge my own.”
He mentioned that this quotation, along with the protagonists’ unwavering resolve and bold approach when confronting challenges, was truly inspiring.
“It’s similar to the significant reforms in Hong Kong over the past few years and how the administration addressed one persistent issue after another,” Lee wrote. “My team and I exhibit similar fearlessness in our innovations… embodying this spirit, Ne Zha inspires us to keep pushing through challenges and carving out our own routes.”
Released in January 2025, Ne Zha 2 is the sequel to Ne Zha, which also achieved massive success when it was released in 2019. Both movies draw from Chinese mythology, featuring a young boy named Ne Zha, who is endowed with extraordinary powers and labeled as a “demon child.”
Like its prequel, Ne Zha 2 shattered box office records and turned into one of the top-earning films originating from mainland China.
The film started showing in Hong Kong the previous month. Since then, it has also been screened in the United States, Canada, Australia, and various other nations.
According to Chinese state media outlet Global Times, Ne Zha 2 cracked the top five films globally at the box office on Saturday.
In his Facebook post, Lee mentioned that the animation demonstrated the “swift advancement” of animation production methods in Mainland China and provided an opportunity for people worldwide to experience “the allure of Chinese culture and narratives.”
